A newly styled XJ was unveiled in 2009 with an all new exterior design marking a complete break from previous XJ designs. The stunning Jaguar XJ X351 is a large luxury sedan that is 32mm longer and 34mm wider than its predecessor the X350 and looks much bigger. It is made from the same lightweight aluminium monocoque body structure as the X350 designed to be exceptionally strong and rigid.

The new XJ features a unique panoramic, heat-reflective, tinted glass roof stretching the full width of the car and extending all the way back. The interior is fitted with a 12.3 inch high definition screen which provides a Virtual Instrument panel in place of the conventional instrument dials. Standard safety features include dual front airbags, front side airbags, Anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, electronic stability control, cornering brake control and traction control.

The engine choices range from a 2.0 litre i4 Turbocharged petrol, a 3.0 litre V6 Turbocharged diesel, a 3.0 litre V6 supercharged petrol to a 5.0 litre V8 supercharged petrol found in the XJ Supersport and XJR. The transmission features a 6-speed automatic gearbox (8-speed automatic from 2012 update) and Jaguar Sequential Shift that enables the driver to perform sequential shifts via the steering wheel mounted paddles.

The X351 features Adaptive Dynamics - electronically controlled continuously variable damping  with driver selectable modes. Adaptive Dynamics optimizes the car's suspension settings for ride comfort and control by monitoring and analyzing speed, steering and body movement. The new XJ features various trim options in both SWB and LWB including Luxury, Premium Luxury, Portfolio, Supersport, Ultimate and XJR.
